My attention was drawn to Dr. Katherine Albrecht’s September 8, 2007 press release - MICROCHIP IMPLANTS CAUSE FAST-GROWING, MALIGNANT TUMORS IN LAB ANIMALS - because I love dogs and have been a life-long dog owner. Dr. Albrecht’s press release revealed that microchip implants have induced cancer in laboratory animals as well as reported deaths in dogs. And I fought not to have a microchip implant in my most recent rescued dog by the shelter. But now, as one who has been deeply involved with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients, my concerns about this have spread to them.

Reflecting on the Christmas holidays these past few years - the lonely cries of my heart as a single woman somewhat isolated and hurting as caregiver for elderly parents in final degenerative stages - my heart and thoughts go out to all caregivers at this joyous time of year that to us, paradoxically, can be so depressing.

Stories of my friend’s adorable grandmother with Dementia really had me bursting into refreshing laughter. “The Fashion Plate.” No, there was no problem getting her to change her clothes . . . but she refused to wear her OWN clothes! (They were too nice, you know.) So she would take one piece of clothing from each of the other family members - the father of the house, mother, son, daughters . . .

Despite all the sadness of seeing your loved one’s memory decline as Alzheimer’s or other Dementia progresses, let’s enjoy the humorous moments, too. Like these. It’s not in the form of making fun of your loved one. It’s just that sometimes when that stubborn determination not to be told what to do takes over in her confused mind, the result can be just too funny not to chuckle.

Dogs can save lives - But CANCER sniffing dogs? Hey, why not? We all know heroic stories of tracking dogs, K9 police dogs, and bomb sniffing dogs. I’ve heard that a Bloodhound’s nose is 100 times more sensitive than that of a human, and a German Shepherd’s 40 to 50 times. So if dogs’ natural talents can be further developed through training to detect a huge number of different scents, why not cancers?

I’m a Family Caregiver. And after a loving and fun Thanksgiving day with family, I returned home this evening to reflect on thanksgiving for - and thanksgiving by - the Family Caregiver. When I was in high school and learned that my cousin had Diabetes, I didn’t know much about it - except that he had to take insulin shots. That seemed awful enough. I could not have anticipated how Diabetes could take a vibrant, tennis-playing, middle-aged, corporate executive to the point that even amputation of his legs could not save his life - as with a friend’s husband. Yes, it’s widespread in America, especially among those advancing in age, the obese, and many of our home health care patients, but even children have challenging forms of Diabetes.
